Academic President of the 4th International Congress of Bengal Studies
Professor Pabitra Sarkar has been nominated as the Academic President of the 4th International Congress of Bengal Studies, to be held in Japan in 2015.
Pabitra Sarkar (1937) has taught in Bangabasi College, Jadavpur University, and University of Minnesota. He also served as the Vice Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University, and the Vice-Chairman, West Bengal State Council for Higher Education. He was a Fulbright Scholar, completing M.A. and Ph. D. in linguistics at the University of Chicago (1975). He has authored about 64 books and edited about 45 books on variety of themes and approaches. He was President, Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, Natya Shodh Sansthan, Bhartiya Bhasha Parishad, Jadavpur University Teachers' Association, and the Indian Advisory Board, American Institute of Indian Studies; Chairman, Centre for Adult Education, West Bengal, One-Man Committee on English at the Primary Schools in West Bengal, Committee on Santali Language in Alchiki Script, West Bengal, Upajati Bhasha Commission, Govt. of Tripura. He was member of Sahitya Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi; Vice President, Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi and the Society for Natural Language Technology and Research, West Bengal. He was the Project Director, Dictionary Project, Asiatic Society, Kolkata. Presently he is President, International Society of Dravidian Linguistics.
Children’s litterateur and Rabindra Sangeet singer, Prof. Pabitra Sarkar has received Vidyasagar Award for prose writings; Satyen Dutta and Titli Awards for Childrens' Literature; and Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration. The Government of Bangladesh has bestowed upon him the Friend of the Bangladesh Liberation War Honor.
২০১৫-তে অনুষ্ঠিতব্য চতুর্থ আন্তর্জাতিক বঙ্গবিদ্যা সম্মেলন-এর বিদ্যায়তনিক সভাপতি মনোনীত হয়েছেন অধ্যাপক পবিত্র সরকার।
অধ্যাপক পবিত্র সরকার (১৯৩৭ খ্রিঃ) বঙ্গবাসী কলেজ, যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এবং মিনেসোটা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অধ্যাপনা করেছেন। এছাড়াও তিনি রবীন্দ্রভারতী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য এবং পশ্চিমবঙ্গ উচ্চশিক্ষা সংসদের সহ-সভাপতি ছিলেন। তিনি বিভিন্ন বিষয়ের উপর পঁয়ষট্টিটি বই লিখেছেন এবং পঁয়তাল্লিশটির মত বই সম্পাদনা করেছেন। তিনি বিভিন্ন সময়ে ভারতীয় সাহিত্য পরিষৎ, নাট্য শোধ সংস্থা, ভারতীয় ভাষা পরিষৎ, যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শিক্ষক সমিতি, ভারতীয় উপদেষ্টা সমিতি, আমেরিকান ইনস্টিটিউট অফ ইন্ডিয়ান স্টাডিজ-এর সভাপতিত্ব করেছেন; পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের প্রাথমিক শিক্ষাব্যবস্থায় ইংরেজি শিক্ষা বিষয়ক কমিটি, পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের অলচিকি লিপিতে সাঁওতালি ভাষার বিস্তার বিষয়ক কমিটি, ত্রিপুরা সরকারের উপজাতি ভাষা কমিশন-এর মত বিভিন্ন কমিটির চেয়ারম্যানের দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন; পশ্চিমবঙ্গ বাংলা অকাদেমি এবং দ্য সোসাইটি ফর ন্যাচারাল ল্যাঙ্গুয়েজ টেকনোলজি এন্ড রিসার্চ-এর সহ-সভাপতিত্ব করেছেন; সাহিত্য অকাদেমি ও সঙ্গীত নাটক অকাদেমি-র সদস্য, এবং কলকাতা এশিয়াটিক স্যোসাইটির অভিধান প্রজেক্ট-এর প্রজেক্ট ডিরেক্টর হিসেবে কাজ করেছেন। বর্তমানে তিনি ইন্টারন্যাশানাল স্যোসাইটি অফ দ্রাভিডিয়ান লিঙ্গুইস্টিক-এর সভাপতি।
শিশু সাহিত্যিক এবং রবীন্দ্রসঙ্গীত শিল্পী পবিত্র সরকার গদ্য রচনার জন্য বিদ্যাসাগর পুরস্কার, শিশুসাহিত্যের জন্য সত্যেন দত্ত এবং তিতলি পুরস্কার, এবং জাতীয় সংহতির জন্য ইন্দিরা গান্ধী পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন। বাংলাদেশ সরকার তাঁকে বাংলাদেশ মুক্তিযুদ্ধের বন্ধু সম্মান প্রদান করেছেন।
